ESTABLISHMENT AND ORGANIZATION OF JWWA

JWWA was established with the authorization of the then Minister of Interior on May 12, 1932, and consists of local public bodies running water supply utilities as its corporate members, learned and experienced men on water works as its individual members and companies/organizations which have close

relationships with water works and support the achievement of JWWA's purpose as its associate members. The number of original members was 132 for the corporate members, 47 for the individual members, 3 for the associate members, in all 182.

However, as of September 1, 1995, the total number has risen to 3,466 with 8 honorary members, 1924 corporate members, 852 individual members and 682 associate members.

The predecessor of JWWA was the Federation of Water Suppliers established in March 1904. Initially as its members, 7 water suppliers of Hakodate, Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima and Nagasaki held various meetings with a view to unifying the service water quality inspection methods.

Thereafter, with the change of times, member cities increased and water works in general came to be discussed, including such matters as techniques and ma nagement of filtration and distribution, etc. That necessitated a drastic reorganization and JWWA was born.

After many alterations due to increased membership and diversified activities, the system/organization of the secretariat is as follows.
