INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES

IWSA RELATIONS

The International Water Supply Association (IWSA) was established at the proposal of European Countries, including the U.K. in 1947. Its main objective is to be an international group regarding public water supply. And it aims to contribute to the development of water supply all over the world through studies of various problems related to water supply, cooperative system among countries in order to exchange information on technological developments, the status quo of facilities and statistics on water supply and the promotion of friendly relations among its members.

The World Congress of IWSA is normally held biannually at sites located worldwide, centering around Europe, and it has been held 20 times so far (Durban 1995).

JWWA jointed IWSA as a corporate member at the 3rd IWSA Conference held in London in 1955. Since then, JWWA has sent a lot of presenters for science and technology programs. In 1978 JWWA successfully hosted the 12th World Congress of IWSA in Kyoto, and the Specialized Conference "Water Osaka '95"in 1995.

For the purpose of contributing to the propagation and development of water supply in the Asian Area, IWSA took the initiative to form Asia-Pacific Group (ASPAC) under it. The Regional Conference of ASPAC group has been held 9 times since the 1st Conference in Bangkok, Thailand in 1977. The 7th Conference was held in Nagoya, Japan in 1989.

TRAINING OF ENGINEERS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) , in order to contribute to the economic and social development of developing areas, has been receiving trainees from such nations and dispatching specialists as part of its operations.

JWWA has been commissioned by JICA to carry out training of engineers of water supply on an individual or group basis since 1970.

JWWA has been greatly contributing by assigning engineers to these foreign countries, training personnel necessary for the development of the global water supply and fostering friendship.

OVERSEAS TRAINING THROUGH INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE FUND

JWWA established the International Exchange Fund in 1990 with a view to dispatching overseas the midlevel staff of its corporate members. The aims of the establishment are : (1) nurturing human resources who will have international perspective and knowledge by researching water supply problems in other countries (2) rendering services for the further development of water supplies in Japan by reporting the findings of such researches. Every year the following are held as trainings (the number of trainees : about 50).

group inspection study of major urban water supply facilities overseas by the midlevel staff of JWWA corporate members
training by speciality

INTERNATIONAL COOPERATIONSYSTEM BY SENIOR EXPERTS ON WATER SUPPLY

As part of international cooperation activities, JWWA has set up an international cooperation system of senior experts on water supply since 1993. This system aims to amicably and pointedly utilize the rich water supply expertise and experience possessed by retirers from municipalities for technical cooperation toward developing countries and to contribute to developing water supply and nurturing human resources in those countries.

OTHERS

In cases where overseas conferences and presentations are meaningful to Japan's water supply, JWWA positively responds to compilation of presented papers or participation in such conferences.

Upon request, JWWA also cooperates with other nations in joint studies on water supply issues.
