If requested at the general assembly or by the president, JWWA undertakes research and studies on problems related to water supply engineering, water quality, standards for equipment and materials, etc.
In the course of such studies, deliberations are made in the Engineering Standing Committee, the Water Sanitation Standing Committee and adhoc special committees for the solution of problems. Findings are published in the form of guidelines, manuals or articles in the JWWA Journal for the members' reference.
At the national level, JWWA is entrusted with various research and studies by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, etc.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF WATER SUPPLY ENGINEERING
The research and development of practical water supply engineering is done at the Water Supply Technology Institute.
The research subjects are (1)supply of safe water (2)stable water supply, proof against earthquake/drought (3)service pipes and their systems (4)efficient management (5)structuring general data base.
And the research processes for these subjects are (1)JWWA's own research (2)commissioned research from JWWA members (3)commissioning research to other institutions (4)joint research with JWWA members/other institutions (5)research guidance to JWWA members, etc.
The concrete activities are (1)services providing members with information (2)periodical issue of technical books and publication of planning references (3)technical interactions such as information services or exchanges with domestic and international research institutes (4)training for water quality tests, leak examination, piping techniques and GIS (computer mapping systems).
In order to ensure the type approval of foreign water supply equipment and materials, the Water Supply Technology Institute has established testing facilities to conduct tests such as intensity, dissolution, and performance on flow and durability.
The above R&D are conducted in cooperation with various Standing Committees, including the Engineering and Inspection Committees.
CONSULTING SERVICE ON WATER SUPPLY ENGINEERING AND WATER QUALITY
JWWA doesn't only respond to consultation about pressing problems concerning water supply engineering and water quality which water works utilities are forced to solve, but also offers surveys, advice and support in wider spheres including water supply projects and surveys of water resources. These activities are mainly performed by the Engineering Department through such efforts as field investigations, etc.
STANDARDIZATION OF WATER SUPPLY EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS
At the request of members, draft standards of water supply equipment and materials are referred to JWWA'S Engineering Standing Committee and Water Sanitation Standing Committee. After the special committee has examined quality uniformity, performance, workability and sanitation, JWWA enacts Japan Water Works Association (JWWA) Standards and amends them, if necessary. (the Standards number:67 as of September 1, 1995)
As for other service devices which are directly connected to water supply equipment, they Type Examination Committee for Water Supply Equipment, in accordance with the Type Approval and Registration System established by JWWA.
